Macular Degeneration

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of serious vision impairment and sight loss in people over 50. Because macular degeneration most often occurs as a result of aging, it’s also called age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The macula is a section of the retina at the back of your eye, and macular degeneration causes changes in the macula that affect your central vision.

What are the symptoms of macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration occurs gradually over time, so you may not notice the deterioration in your sight at first. When you do start to notice symptoms, you might experience problems with your vision such as:

  • Not being able to see clearly
  • Distorted shapes
  • Straight lines appear to be wavy or crooked
  • Color vision fades
  • There’s a dark spot in the center of your vision

When you see any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your optometrist at Insight Eye Care straight away. They can carry out tests to confirm whether you have macular degeneration or if there’s another cause for your symptoms. Insight Eye Care also offers genetic testing for macular degeneration.

How is macular degeneration treated?

Treatment for macular degeneration depends on whether you have the dry form (atrophic) or the wet form (exudative).

Dry macular degeneration is the most common form of AMD, and unfortunately, there’s no cure. However, research indicates that there’s a link between nutrient intake and how quickly dry macular degeneration progresses. Insight Eye Care provides specially formulated supplements to help slow macular degeneration in their patients.

The less common wet macular degeneration causes a much more rapid loss of vision, but prompt treatment can reduce the extent of vision loss. Possible treatments for wet AMD include:

  • An injection of medication into the eye
  • Laser treatment to seal the abnormal blood vessels that are causing wet AMD
  • Photodynamic therapy using medication that’s activated by a laser

These treatments can’t cure macular degeneration, but they could help you retain your sight for as long as possible. If you’re experiencing any sight loss or disturbances in your vision, call Insight Eye Care today or book an appointment online.
