Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems are used for photorejuvenation. Photorejuvenation assists in the treatment of the following skin conditions:
Like laser treatments, IPL treatments use light energy. The difference between IPL and a laser is that IPL focuses a multitude of wavelengths of light on your skin, similar to a photo flash. IPL also emits less focused and scattered light. The light penetrates your skin without causing damage to the top layer.
Upon absorption of the light from IPL, the pigment cells in your skin turn it into heat, which eliminates freckles, age spots, and other blemishes in your skin.
Despite its versatility, IPL may not be as effective on uneven skin. If you have darker skin tones or keloid scars, intense pulsed light therapy should not be used.
IPL is very safe!! All required safety precautions and all IPL-specific guidelines will be followed to ensure the utmost in safety during your treatments. This includes the use of protective eyewear at all times while the equipment is in use. We recommend the removal of contact lenses during facial treatments.
IPL is conducted by an experienced IPL technician/doctor at a specialized treatment facility. To protect your eyes, special glasses or corneal shields (for stye and dry eye treatment) will be worn. The skin will be treated with a cool gel. Next, the IPL device is gently placed on your skin. Since you are wearing eye protection, you won’t see anything, but you will feel the pulsing light, which may feel like a slight tingle or sting. As we’ve mentioned before, this procedure is completely safe and proven to be effective too!
IPL usually leaves the skin red, swollen, and sensitive (sunburn sensation). Swelling and redness usually go away within a few days. The skin may remain irritated for a few days afterward. Infections (rare), skin color changes, bruising, and blistering can sometimes occur.
To ensure the best possible results and minimize any risks, it’s important to properly prepare your skin before your Lumecca IPL session. Follow these pre-treatment guidelines carefully and reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.
Avoid Sun Exposure
Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for at least two weeks before your treatment.
If you must be outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily.
Skip any self-tanning products or spray tans for at least one to two weeks prior to your appointment.
Stop using products that contain retinoids (retinol, tretinoin), chemical exfoliants (such as glycolic or salicylic acid), or any other potentially irritating ingredients for 2–7 days before your treatment.
Avoid other skin treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser procedures for at least two weeks before your session.
Inform us of all medications and supplements you are taking, as some may increase light sensitivity or bruising risk.
If you’re on photosensitizing medications (like doxycycline) or anticoagulants, ask your doctor whether you should pause them before treatment.
If you have a history of cold sores, your provider may recommend taking an antiviral medication before and after treatment to help prevent an outbreak.
Arrive with clean skin — free of makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or any other topical products.
If you’re treating an area with hair, shave it the night before your appointment.
Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your session.
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water leading up to your treatment.
Following these steps helps ensure your Lumecca IPL treatment is safe, effective, and comfortable, giving you the best possible results and a healthy, radiant glow. ✨
